Tips for getting the lowest possible fares.
Book in Advance
Booking in advance, especially by more than seven days, can often result in a substantial savings on airfare. Should fuel prices rise, booking in advance can also allow you to lock in a fare with a lower surcharge. Travel agents advise booking as soon as you know your plans, especially for holiday travel, travel over school breaks, and travel to destinations during peak season. For general domestic travel, it's a good idea to book at least 21 days in advance. Plan a weekday departure
Weekend arrival and departure fares tend to be higher because these are peak travel times. When possible, try to plan for travel during week days.
Avoid travel during school breaks
Like weekend departures, fares tend to increase during school breaks and national holidays. Avoiding these dates can result in significantly lower fares.
Book late night or early morning
Booking a late night or very early morning flight bypasses peak daily travel times and is generally reflected by a lower fare.
Be flexible
The more flexible you are when you fly, the better your chances of saving more. When searching fares, try looking for flights on alternate dates; sometimes flying even a day earlier or later than your original travel dates can save you considerably.
Fly at less popular times
Popular destinations such as Europe and Australia have distinct high seasons when more travelers visit. During these peak times, prices for flights increase to meet demand. If you choose a destination during a time when it's less popular to visit—October through March in Europe, for example—you may be able save 50% or more.
